Cascadia + LuxWall Push the Commercial Window to R-11: Why a Fiberglass Frame With Vacuum-Insulated Glass Just Changed the Retrofit Math

Cascadia Windows & Doors is combining its commercial fiberglass Universal Series frame with LuxWall's Enthermal Plus vacuum-insulated glass to deliver an R-11+ total window—up to 5x better than mainstream vinyl and aluminum. The pairing also unlocks glass-only retrofits for existing commercial buildings staring down tightening energy codes.

The Announcement

A new commercial window system is landing that pushes past the performance ceiling most specifiers assume for punched-opening fenestration. Cascadia Windows & Doors and LuxWall announced a product partnership that will bring to market an ultra-high-performance window system, designed for energy efficiency and sustainability.

The headline number is the one architects and envelope consultants have been chasing for a decade. By integrating LuxWall's Enthermal Plus transparent insulation into Cascadia's commercial-grade Universal Series fiberglass window frame, the companies are delivering a window product achieving an R-11+ total window insulating value—an improvement over traditional vinyl, wood, wood clad, and aluminum windows, which typically range from R-2 to R-4 total window insulating value.

That's a 3x–5x jump in whole-window R-value versus the code-minimum options that fill most punched-opening schedules today. For context: R-11 is territory usually reserved for opaque wall assemblies, not vision glass.

What's Actually in the Assembly

The system pairs two established sub-systems that haven't been packaged this way before:

  • Cascadia Universal Series frame — a commercial-grade fiberglass window frame already used on Passive House and other high-performance envelope projects.
  • LuxWall Enthermal Plus — a vacuum insulating glass (VIG) unit that LuxWall markets as transparent insulation. LuxWall's transparent insulation technology, Enthermal, provides a step change in energy performance by significantly reducing convective, conductive, and radiative heat gain and heat loss in buildings.

Cascadia's president framed the market driver bluntly. "As energy codes become increasingly demanding and the need for ultra-efficient buildings grows, we are committed to offering the best-performing window solutions possible," says Mike Battistel, President at Cascadia Windows & Doors.

The Retrofit Play Is the Bigger Story

New construction is the obvious use case. The more disruptive angle is what this pairing enables on existing buildings that don't want—or can't afford—a full envelope tear-off.

In addition to combining the Universal Series with Enthermal Plus VIG as a complete window system, Cascadia will also offer glass-only retrofits or secondary window system retrofits, in which LuxWall's Enthermal is installed directly into existing window frames. This retrofit option enables commercial building owners to upgrade their thermal performance without the need for a complete window or envelope rehabilitation.

For building owners facing Energize Vancouver-style building performance standards, NYC's Local Law 97, Boston's BERDO 2.0, or the growing list of state and municipal BPS regimes, this is the missing tool. "Retrofitting existing older windows with high-performance glass can be a cost-effective way to improve energy efficiency and minimize tenant disruption," said Battistel. "By integrating LuxWall's Enthermal into existing windows, we're providing a powerful solution to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions for commercial buildings that might otherwise struggle to meet modern efficiency standards, such as Energize Vancouver."

Practical Implications for Specifiers and Owners

For architects and envelope consultants:

  • R-11+ vision glass changes the calculus on window-to-wall ratio limits in stretch energy codes. Envelope-first design strategies get a genuine tool rather than a workaround.
  • Whole-window U-values in the 0.09 range (the inverse of R-11) put punched fiberglass windows in the same performance neighborhood as opaque metal panel assemblies—simplifying thermal bridging analysis and condensation risk modeling in cold climates.
  • The commercial-grade frame designation matters. Universal Series is designed for institutional and multifamily use, not just single-family Passive House projects.

For general contractors and glazing subs:

  • The glass-only retrofit option is a scope you should be pricing now. Occupied-building window upgrades that don't require exterior scaffolding or interior demolition are a fundamentally different bid.
  • Handling VIG in the field is not the same as handling standard IGUs. Edge protection, storage, and installation sequencing need to be tightened before your first project.

For owners and asset managers:

  • The retrofit path is aimed squarely at the CapEx conversation between building performance standard compliance and full facade replacement.
  • Expect this pairing to show up in ESG-linked refinancing conversations, where a quantifiable jump from R-3 to R-11 across a building's vision glass area is unusually easy to underwrite.

The Broader Signal

LuxWall has been busy commercializing across the fenestration stack—curtain wall applications with structural silicone glazing compatibility, plus partnerships with major fabricators. The Cascadia deal extends that reach into punched-opening commercial windows and, crucially, into the retrofit market that dwarfs new construction in most North American cities.

Expect the R-11 window to move quickly from novelty to spec-sheet reference point in projects chasing Passive House, LEED Zero, or municipal BPS compliance. And expect the RFP language for commercial window packages to start including a line about VIG compatibility—whether or not the base bid uses it.
