Standard Single Hung
A fixed upper sash with an operable lower sash. The most common configuration for production residential construction.
Single hung windows use a fixed upper sash and a movable lower sash that slides vertically for ventilation. They deliver the familiar look of a double hung at a lower cost and are common in residential new construction, production housing, multifamily projects, and budget-sensitive replacement work. The simplified upper sash can improve cost and frame stiffness, but it limits ventilation flexibility and usually makes exterior cleaning of the upper glass more dependent on outside access.

Performance & Ratings
Project Coordination
Debris blocks drainage and can interfere with sash travel, locks, and weatherstripping.
Uneven side reveals indicate an out-of-square frame, poor shimming, or balance problems.
Excess expanding foam can bow the frame and make the lower sash hard to operate.
Product Questions
Single hung windows usually cost less and have a simpler fixed upper sash, which is attractive when upper-sash ventilation is not needed.
Sometimes. The lower sash opening must meet the required clear width, clear height, area, and sill height.
The lower sash may tilt in on many products, but the fixed upper sash often needs exterior access for cleaning.
