Multi-Slide Door System

A large-format door system with multiple panels that slide horizontally along a track, stacking or pocketing to create wide unobstructed openings.

Published April 21, 2026

Overview

Multi-slide door systems are designed to maximize the transition between interior and exterior spaces. Unlike traditional sliding patio doors with only two panels, multi-slide systems support three, four, six, or more panels, enabling openings that span 20 to 60+ feet.

Common Configurations

  • Stacking: All panels slide to one end and stack against each other
  • Pocket: Panels slide into a wall cavity, fully disappearing from view
  • Split (center-open): Panels divide at the center and stack to both ends

Performance Considerations

Multi-slide systems are evaluated on:

  • Thermal performance: U-factor, SHGC, condensation resistance
  • Air infiltration: AAMA/WDMA test ratings (typically AL-2 or AL-3 for commercial)
  • Water resistance: Design pressure and water penetration resistance
  • Structural: Wind load ratings, especially for coastal and high-altitude installations

Common Frame Materials

  • Aluminum (most common for large spans)
  • Thermally broken aluminum (better energy performance)
  • Aluminum-clad wood (premium residential)
  • Fiberglass (emerging, high-performance niche)

Key Manufacturers

Western Window Systems, NanaWall, LaCantina Doors, Arcadia, Fleetwood Windows & Doors, Solar Innovations

Typical Applications

Luxury residential (great rooms, primary suites, covered patios), hospitality (indoor-outdoor dining), commercial (lobbies, storefronts)
