Allegion's acquisition of Overly Door Company adds acoustic, blast, bullet-resistant, and vault doors to a hollow-metal portfolio already stocked with Schlage and Von Duprin. For specifiers writing high-security openings into schools, courthouses, and hospitals, the one-vendor equation just got simpler.
A Specialty Door Pure-Play Lands Inside the Industry's Biggest Access-Solutions Platform
Allegion plc, the Dublin-based parent of Schlage, Von Duprin, LCN, and CISA, has quietly closed one of the more consequential openings-industry deals of the fall. On October 5, Allegion PLC announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Overly Door Company, a private manufacturer specializing in custom specialty doors for high-security applications. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The target is not a household name among residential specifiers, but it should be familiar to anyone who has detailed a courthouse, embassy, data center, or hospital imaging suite. Founded in 1888 and headquartered in Greensburg, Pa., Overly manufactures custom acoustic, blast-resistant, bullet-resistant and vault security doors. The company also produces specialty windows for acoustic, bullet-resistant, blast, vault security and radiation shielding purposes.
For Allegion, which reported $4.1 billion in revenue in 2025, Overly is a bolt-on into a product category the parent didn't credibly serve at the high-security end of the spec sheet.
What Allegion Actually Bought
Overly's catalog is narrow, deep, and heavily spec-driven. The product mix matters because each category carries its own testing regime and compliance paper trail:
- Acoustic doors — STC-rated assemblies used in music schools, broadcast studios, courtrooms, and behavioral-health facilities
- Blast-resistant doors — tested to UFC 4-010-01 and ASTM F2247 for federal, military, and critical infrastructure openings
- Bullet-resistant doors — UL 752-rated for police stations, cash-handling spaces, school vestibules, and government facilities
- Vault doors — for data centers, pharmacies, and financial institutions
- Radiation-shielding doors — for hospital imaging and oncology suites
These solutions are designed to meet the demanding requirements of facilities where conventional door systems may not provide the required level of protection or performance.
Why This Deal Matters to Specifiers and GCs
Until now, project teams writing a hollow-metal door schedule for a non-residential project typically used Allegion brands for the hardware — the hinges, closers, exit devices, electrified locks, and access control — and then went outside the Allegion ecosystem for anything requiring blast, ballistic, or acoustic performance. That created coordination friction: separate submittals, separate approved-equal cycles, and often separate installers for the door itself versus the openings hardware.
The company's offerings complement Allegion's existing hollow metal doors and frames business. The inclusion of Overly's expertise in high-security door products, coupled with its strong innovation capabilities, will enable Allegion to boost its hollow metal doors and frames portfolio. It will also help ALLE expand its presence across government, healthcare and education markets.
For architects and door consultants, three practical implications stand out:
- Fewer vendors on the submittal log. A single-source order for door, frame, and hardware simplifies warranty, lead-time, and change-order management on projects where the opening itself is life-safety critical.
- Specification language will shift. Expect Overly's model numbers to start appearing alongside Schlage and Von Duprin in Allegion's AIA MasterSpec contributions and in BIM/Revit libraries over the next 12–18 months.
- Lead times on specialty openings may compress. Allegion's scale in logistics and distribution — the same engine that moves millions of Schlage cylinders annually — can be pointed at a product category that has historically been quoted in months, not weeks.
The Market Context
The timing isn't accidental. Hardening projects — school entry vestibules, courthouse perimeter upgrades, federal facility retrofits — have been a steady spend item through the current commercial-construction slowdown. Allegion is strengthening its non-residential product portfolio across government, education and healthcare markets, the three verticals where blast and ballistic specs show up most consistently.
Operationally, Overly will operate as part of the Allegion Americas segment, led by Allegion Senior Vice President Dave Ilardi, and Overly leaders Tyler and Jonathan Reese will join Allegion to support a smooth transition for the business. That leadership continuity is important for a product line where engineering judgment, custom detailing, and testing-lab relationships are the moat.
The Takeaway
For the broader openings industry, this deal is a signal: the big access-solutions platforms are no longer content to own only the hardware on the door. They want the door itself — particularly when that door is specified for performance rather than aesthetics. Expect more consolidation in the specialty door segment over the next 18 months, and expect your approved-equals list to get shorter.
